Considerate design in the extension of a Grade II listed building

Project Description

Highly commended in the Construction News Awards 2020, University House Business School – University of Birmingham, PCS designed, supplied and installed the composite natural stone and brick slip façade to this impressive extension of the existing grade II listed business school.

The Main Contractor, Morgan Sindall, was required to use natural stone to complement the existing building but faced challenges in supporting and restraining heavy dimensioned natural stone back to the lightweight SFS frame.  PCS offered a solution using lightweight composite natural stone panels fabricated off site and delivered in sequence to suit the build program.

The stone selected was sourced from Indiana Limestone in the USA which has the enviable reputation of supplying the stone to the Empire State Building and Pentagon amongst others.  The brick slip infill panels were constructed using traditional clay bricks cut into slips and secured onto a rainscreen support system.
